Claude earned certification with the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) (www.ptg.org) in 1977 and is one of some 2000 Registered Piano Technicians in the PTG. A Registered Piano Technician (RPT) must demonstrate knowledge and skill in piano service by passing a series of three exams. These exams test general knowledge, tuning, regulating both vertical and grand actions, and various repairs.
After earning Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Baylor University, Claude became interested in piano service as a hobby. In a few years, his interest became a passion, and, in 1979, he started Harding Piano Service and became a full-time piano technician.
Claude services pianos in homes, schools, churches, and performance venues. In-home tuning and service is a major part of his work. Many minor repairs and action adjustments can be done on-site, even at the time of tuning. Pianos that need more extensive repair or service are brought to his shop, where major reconditioning or rebuilding can be accomplished.
Throughout the years, he has also found time to serve churches as a part-time choral director/worship leader. His wife, an accomplished pianist, has assisted him in that work.
